In the dark winter days of 2024 winter we received an enquiry for an outside room, a space for the family dogs, an unusual request.
Following the survey, it was evident that of the two locations proposed by the client, the one adjacent to the Kitchen presented the least technical challenges whilst opening up a section of the house to the garden..
The selected location for the new Glass Room
The modern design of the house presented a specific challenge as the roof overhangs the walls by 600mm (2 feet), providing no structural fixing for the glass roof to the house. Using our 3D design tool, the needed structural support was designed, comprising two heavy-duty posts fixed to the wall and cantilevered out to support a steel beam running along the face of the existing roof overhang. This was fabricated by a specialist Crocodilla of Salisbury who also checked the structural integrity. The steelwork would support the glass roof whilst not putting any load on the existing roof structure. Crocodilla are able to powder coat to an extensive colour pallet so the post and beam could be powder coated matched the colour of the glass room framing.
The structural post and beam blending in to the existing downpipes and overall design.
Before we could start the client wanted to have the area paved. We proposed a local company we often work with and were able to liaise direct with the paviour to make sure the dimensions and foundations worked for our layouts.
The Glass Room specification selected was as follows:
Weinor Terrazza L Plus Sempra roof with 2No posts and 10.8mm laminated safety glass.
Weinor w17 full glass sliding door in three panes with 10mm safety glass to right side of room.
Weinor GE W50-C side wall with 8mm safety glass to left side of room.
Weinor w17 full glass sliding door in five panes with 10mm safety glass to the front of the glass room.
Three LED Design light bars, each with 3 spot lights.
BiConnect receiver and silver multi-channel controller for the LED lights.
From a choice of over 50 different colours as standard the client selected RAL 7015 (Slate grey) for the aluminium.
The client also requested only two posts to the front to avoid a central post obscuring the view to the garden. To achieve this, the gutter beam was reinforced to accommodate the 6m span, giving a clear view the client wanted.
The overhang presented a particular challenge with the wedge glass having to be cut to size from templates by our glass supplier Cornwall Glass a local company.

The aluminium roof flashings connecting the Glass Room roof to the existing were fabricated by Project Exe and powder coated by 1st Choice both local Exter companies. By using local companies, we are able to control deliveries and quality whilst supporting local enterprise.
The selected site was perfect for future views looking over an attractive aspect of the garden, The end result can be seen in the image below, whilst looking impressive the real measure of the room is what the client thinks of it, a quote below from the client
Transformation from dead space to a garden haven
“our new glass room has very quickly become the new heart of our home – we along with our children and dogs are all drawn to the space that is so very peaceful and pleasant to spend time in, it really connects you to the nature outdoors and the sky in particular. We would highly recommend this product and EGRAV.”
